You guys will discover once you graduate college you’re suddenly thrust into the real world. Education (unless you chose to pursue more) is for the most part behind you. And your career path is ahead of you. As you’ll quickly see work takes up a lot of your time and energy so (in my opinion) it’s crucial to find a job you at least enjoy a little. Ideally one you’re passionate about. If you spend day after day putting hard work and effort into something you really don’t care about you’re probably not going to feel very happy or fulfilled in the long run. As a young man these years following college are critical because you’re responsible for setting the groundwork for the rest of your life. Sounds like a lot of pressure for one kid to have on them, huh? Well it kinda is. But finding your path/ideal career isn’t an overnight process. Many young men might not know exactly what their purpose is. And that’s ok. I encourage all of you to take on new tasks and challenges. Try new things. You might not love every job you work and that’s ok. All these experiences can have some useful takeaways and learning experiences. And as you decide the things you DON’T want to to you’ll be that much closer to finding the things you do enjoy.
Another important thing about forging your path, is that it’s yours and no one elses. You’ll probably get advice or suggestions from a lot of people. From guidance counselors to parents, maybe even your peers. And some of this can be useful. However, always go with what you feel is right in your heart. If you really want to be an artist and get offered an accounting job that pays well but you’re not happy there, then forget it. Money and experience is important but know when it’s time to walk away and move towards where you really want to be. You only get one life, why not spend it doing work that makes you happy. It may be a more difficult road to get to but the reward will be worth it. Realize what your talents and passions are and how to monetize them. What can you do that no one else can? What makes you unique? I strongly suggest all you guys harness these skills because we need more creativity and originality in the world. Remember, it’s ok to stumble and explore new paths when you’re young, but once you see one in sight you want, don’t stop pursuing it until you’ve reached the top.
Till next time,
-BTD
